The Life and Works of Thomas Hardy

When Thomas Hardy’s novels were first published, in serial form in popular magazines, they caused a sensation.  Novels were meant to be funny, entertaining and romantic; they had not previously been a vehicle for tragedy.  Hardy changed all that; his stories documented the bleak realities of life in rural “Wessex” in the nineteenth century and highlighted what Hardy perceived as the flawed moral values of Victorian society.
