Portrait of Bradford

Bradford is one of Britain’s most cosmopolitan cities, with a vibrant population which represents wide ethnic origins yet which lives together in harmony.

Originally built on the wealth won from the woollen industry, Bradford has developed from its former ‘muck and brass’ image into a lively, go-ahead city which faces the future with typical Yorkshire confidence. The old Bradford is reflected in the area known as Little Germany, where a number of German textile manufacturers settled in the 19th century, at the Wool Exchange in Market Street, and the remains of the many mills which still dot the landscape. Saltaire on the outskirts of the city is a model industrial village built by Sir Titus Salt and now a centre for the arts.

Modern Bradford is epitomised by the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television, which was founded in 1983 in purpose-built premises which included an IMAX theatre.

John Morrison’s affectionate look at the city shows us aspects of Bradford seldom seen in a stunning series of over 140 colour photographs. John Morrison, who lives in Hebden Bridge, has previously written Tales from Litterdale and Dawdling through the Dales for Halsgrove, and also provided photographs and captions for the highly-acclaimed Yorkshire Dales Moods, and Portrait of Leeds published in 2004.
