Let's Walk Upper Teesdale
Acknowledged as one of England’s most beautiful and spectacular areas, Upper Teesdale is world-famous for its unique geology and flora. Wherever you roam in the upper Dale, its secluded and unspoilt landscape, richly endowed with natural beauty, provides an incredible feeling of solitude and tranquillity. Upper Teesdale is situated within the North Pennines National Landscape, which became the first area in Britain to receive UNESCO Global Geopark status, stressing its global importance.
Some guidebooks define ‘Upper’ Teesdale as the area upstream of Middleton-in-Teesdale, while the parts downstream from the village are ‘Lower’ Teesdale; other writers suggest that Upper
Teesdale finishes at Barnard Castle or Winston. As a compromise, I’ve used Romaldkirk as the central point for this guide and its companion volume to provide a more convenient overlap between these two areas. The North Pennines National Landscape has a large network of footpaths and bridleways that offer an extensive choice of routes, from gentle riverside rambles to more strenuous fell walks.
Each of the guides has ten circular routes and contains:
• Full-colour maps with numbered pointers to identify the current position for each walk.
• Illustrated throughout with colour photographs of features
seen during the walks.
• Route directions with grid references beside each map to aid navigation.
• What3words, postcode and complete OS reference to identify each walk’s starting point.
This book covers the area from Cow Green Reservoir to Romaldkirk. The walks offer a stunning introduction to the diverse scenery of this beautiful area.
