Dorset in the World Wars

With around an eighty-five mile stretch of England’s south coast and a number of important harbours, it was perhaps inevitable that Dorset would play a major role in both world wars.  In 1914 the Grand Fleet assembled in Portland Harbour and in 1944 thousands of British and Allied troops left Dorset’ shore for Normandy.  Dorset’s airfields were active throughout World War II and its fertile land helped feed the nation in both world wars.  With many archive photographs, this book tells the story of Dorset’s contributions to these epic struggles.
