The National Geographic Society (NGS) has been in existence since 1888. Its headquarters are in Washington, D.C. in the United States, and it is one of the largest non-profit scientific and educational institutions in the world. With a mission to "increase and diffuse geographic knowledge while promoting the conservation of the world's cultural, historical, and natural resources", members of the National Geographic Society travel the Earth to reveal its many natural wonders. The National Geographic Society are also involved in expeditions, scientific fieldwork, geography education and the promotion of natural and cultural conservation through a variety of media. National Geographic Magazine is the official journal of the NGS. Other publications include a range of magazines, books, school resources, web and film products, and, of course, maps.
