Israel (full name, State of Israel) covers an area of approximately 22,000 sq km with a terrain consisting of desert in the south, low coastal plain, central mountains and the Jordan Rift Valley. Israel borders Egypt, the Gaza Strip, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and the West Bank, and has 273 km of coastline. The country is divided into 6 districts: Central, Haifa, Jerusalem, Northern, Southern and Tel Aviv. The capital is Jerusalem (though most foreign embassies are in Tel Aviv) with a time difference of 2 hours ahead of GMT. The currency is the new Israeli shekel, and exports include computer software, military equipment, chemicals and agricultural products. The population of approximately 7,200,000 people comprises an ethnic makeup that is 76.4% Jewish (the remainder being mostly Arab). The primary languages are Hebrew and Arabic, and the predominant religions are Judaism and Islam.
