America, or The Americas, refers to the land mass of the Western hemisphere comprising the continents of North America, Central America, South America and the islands of the Caribbean. The geography of this part of the world is dominated by the American cordillera which runs along the western coast of almost the entire the region and includes the Andes in South America and the Rocky Mountains in North America. In the east of North America are the Appalachian Mountains and the Arctic Cordillera, running along the eastern coast of Canada. Between these two vast mountain ranges lie vast, flat interior plains. In South America, in the north-eastern region, is the extensive, low lying area of the Amazon Basin. The Amazon has the highest volume flow of any river in the world. Further south are the immense, lowland plains (The Pampas) of South America, covering an area of over 750,000 sq km.
