Saint Helena is a British Overseas Territory lying midway between South America and Africa. With an area of only 122 sq km and 60 km of coastline, Saint Helena’s terrain is rugged and volcanic with small scattered plateaux and plains. Jamestown is the capital, with a time zone corresponding to that of GMT. The currency is the St. Helena Pound (equal to the British pound), and exports include agriculture, fishing concessions and tourism. The population of approximately 7,600 people has an ethnic mix including 50% of African descent, 25% white and 25% Chinese. The primary language is English, and the predominant religion is Christianity.
