Niger (full name, The Republic of Niger) covers an area of approximately 1.27 million sq km with a terrain consisting of predominately desert plains and sand dunes with flat to rolling plains in the south and hills in the north. Niger borders Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Libya, Mali and Nigeria, and is completely landlocked. The country is divided into 8 administrative regions: Agadez, Diffa, Dosso, Maradi, Niamey, Tahoua, Tillaberi and Zinder. Niamey is the capital, with a time difference of 1 hour ahead of GMT. The currency is the CFA (Communaute Financiere Africaine) franc, and exports include uranium and livestock products. The population of approximately 15,300,000 people has an ethnic mix including 55.4% Haoussa and 21% Djerma Sonrai. Primary languages are French, Arabic, Hausa and Songhai, and the predominant religions are Islam and indigenous beliefs.
