Mauritania (full name, The Islamic Republic of Mauritania) covers an area of approximately 1.04 million sq km. Its terrain consists of the mostly barren, flat plains of the Sahara and some central hills. Mauritania borders Algeria, Mali, Senegal and Western Sahara, and has 754 km of coastline. The country is divided into 12 administrative regions (Adrar, Assaba, Brakna, Dakhlet Nouadhibou, Gorgol, Guidimaka, Hodh Ech Chargui, Hodh El Gharbi, Inchiri, Tagant, Tiris Zemmour and Trarza) and a capital district (Nouakchott). Nouakchott is the capital, with a time zone corresponding to that of GMT. The currency is the ouguiya, and exports include fish, fish products, iron ore and gold. The population of approximately 3,100,000 people has an ethnic mix including 40% mixed Moor/black, 30% Moor and 30% black. Primary languages are Arabic and French, and the predominant religion is Islam.
