Kenya (full name, The Republic of Kenya) covers an area of approximately 583,000 sq km. Its terrain consists of low plains rising to central highlands bisected by Great Rift Valley, and a fertile plateau in the west. Bordering Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda, Kenya has 536 km of coastline. The country is divided into 7 provinces: Central, Coast, Eastern, North Eastern, Nyanza, Rift Valley and Western – and one area: Nairobi Area. Nairobi is the capital, with a time difference of 3 hours ahead of GMT. The currency is the Kenya shilling, and main exports include tea, coffee, horticulture and petroleum products. The population of approximately 39,000,000 people contains the ethnic groups Kikuyu (22%), Luhya (14%), Luo (13%), Kalenjin (12%) and Kamba (11%). Main languages are Swahili and English, and the predominant religion is Christianity.
